De Gournay Plum Blossom Wallpaper

P.O.A.

Hand-painted wallpaper. Lavender colourway on Tarnished Silver gilded paper.

This design was inspired by a painted white silk Kimono from the late Edo period. In the early 19th century, artist Sakai Hoitsu, better known for his work on scrolls and folding screens, turned his hand to the Kimono, painting a blooming plum tree beautifully designed to move with the wearer. The blossoming tree limbs of de Gournay’s design envelope spaces convey the same lively movement originally depicted in the Kimono.
